THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FACIAL ORTHOTROPICS
PROSPECTUS

By John and Michael Mew

Two Year Clinical Course in Biobloc Orthotropics ®

Held at The London School of Facial Orthotropics, Purley Courtyard Clinic, 16-18 Pampisford Road, Purley Surrey. CR8 2NE.

Introduction
Facial Orthotropics is defined as “Ensuring that Growing Children Reach their Optimum Genetic Facial and Dental Potential”. It is founded on the ‘Tropic Premise’ which states that “Ideal facial development is dependent on correct oral posture with the tongue on the Palate, the Lips Sealed and the Teeth in or Near Occlusion”. If the patient has an open mouth posture then the face will grow ‘Vertically’ and this coupled with parafunction and low motor tone is essentially the cause of malocclusion. We know that the direction of facial growth is not inherited because it varies so much in identical twins.

People with natural ‘Horizontal’ growth have good looking faces with room for 32 straight teeth and ‘Biobloc’ appears to be the only technique that has the prime objective of converting ‘Vertical’ growth to ‘Horizontal’. Horizontal growth gives the teeth the opportunity to align themselves and avoids most ear, nose and throat as well as TMJ problems. Conventional orthodontic treatment often increases ‘Vertical’ growth. There is widespread scientific evidence to justify these beliefs and little or no evidence to contradict them. Certainly the results of Biobloc Orthotropics seem to go beyond what has been achieved elsewhere. It seems probable that this approach will become the standard of care for all young children in the future and that conventional orthodontic treatment will become restricted to older children who slipped through the net.

Educators
Instructors for this course will be Dr John Mew, and Dr Michael Mew, experienced lecturers with charisma who will teach and assist on the course during different sessions

Students
This is a two year clinical course of continuing instruction for experienced dentists, pedodontists and orthodontists who prefer to treat young children. Attendance for the course will be limited to eight clinicians. Biobloc Orthotropics requires good manual dexterity, creative thinking skills and the ability to relate with young children. Students will be selected on this basis and are expected to have studied the basis of Biobloc Orthotropics before their first attendance.

Format and Dates
For the convenience of busy clinicians there will be ten one day sessions held over a period of 24 months, when possible on Saturdays. The sessions will be held as follows:

The first 3 sessions will be held once a month.
Next 2 sessions will be held once every 2 months.
Next 2 sessions will be held once every 3 months.
The final 3 sessions will be held once every 4 months.

The initial dates will be September 14th, October 12th and November 9th 2006. Subsequent dates will be adjusted to suit the majority of students. If, due to unforeseen problems, it is necessary to change advertised dates of the course, we will try to give 2 months advance notice. If a session is cancelled at short notice due to problems beyond our control such as inclement weather or airline problems we will do our best to notify all concerned but it would be wise to contact us if in doubt.

Diploma
A Diploma of Competence or attendance will be issued as appropriate, valid for 70 hours of participation continuing education credits. 70 CPD points have been applied for.

Patients
It is recommended that doctors bring one or two of their own patients to each session returning with the same patients whenever possible. Alternatively they can bring other patients under treatment or good records of the same or different patients. For students who live a great distance from the school and would find it difficult to bring their own patients, the clinic will try to allocate one or two patients to the name of the course participants. These patients will be cared for by the school at a discount and will sign a privacy form and informed consent acknowledging that they fully understand that they are being treated in front of other doctors and staff members. The course member will reimburse the school for this discount. Participating doctors who wish to bring their own Orthotropic patients for treatment at the school will be responsible for paying for all appliances and expenses apart from consumables. These doctors will be fully responsible for their own patients care while at the school and at their own office.

Structure
Before each session there will be an introductory lecture related to the planned topics of the day. These are participatory and interactive. Course participants will then either treat their own patients or watch others doing so in small groups. These sessions will also be interactive but open criticism should be muted. There will be a working lunch with a discussion of factors raised during the morning. There will then be another clinical session followed by a final reassessment when students will be encouraged to present their own material.
